Press Releases
MELBOURNE, Fla. and MCLEAN, Va., May 19, 2010 -- LiveTV and Iridium Communications Inc. (Nasdaq:IRDM) have entered into an agreement to develop an aviation antenna based on the Iridium OpenPort® high-speed communications service, which launched in the maritime market in 2008. LiveTV is displaying a prototype of the antenna, developed for a LiveTV Iridium OpenPort-based system enabling cockpit-to-cabin connectivity services, this week at the Aircraft Interiors Expo 2010 in Hamburg, Germany, May 18-20, 2010.
"The success of the Iridium OpenPort platform for maritime led us to move forward with the development of the aviation version with the same attributes, network quality and coverage that our customers depend on," said Greg Ewert, executive vice president, global distribution channels, Iridium. "Our global network provides worldwide coverage, including the North and South Poles, which is critical to aircraft operators and is paramount to why we have partnered with LiveTV to develop this groundbreaking service. Commercial and general aviation passengers can now be within reach, even when flying oceanic or Polar routes."
"We are excited about this first public showing of the LiveTV Iridium OpenPort-based solution for aviation," said Mike Moeller, LiveTV's vice president of sales and marketing. "Under our agreement with Iridium, our engineering teams are working closely together to finalize a market-ready service, and we expect to engage in Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) air trials by the fourth quarter 2010, with full commercial rollout early in 2011."
The antenna and electronics on display at Aircraft Interiors Expo 2010 is the first of a series of LiveTV products providing solutions for both commercial and general aviation customers. The solution provides up to 128 kbps and three voice channels in an always-on IP configuration.
The planned low capital cost of the LiveTV Iridium OpenPort-based aviation equipment, and cost-effective airtime packages, will enable affordable ongoing, global connectivity to keep crew, operations staff and passengers in touch, according to Moeller, who also foresees a considerable market in the business jet sector.
Ewert noted that Iridium NEXT, the company's next-generation satellite constellation, will be backward compatible with the Iridium OpenPort platform.
